This is well-intentioned, but not helpful. In fact – it is a career staller.
The top request for support at 2Connect in 2025 is for leaders “who aren’t ready for the next level” and “have trouble presenting to executives”. We always ask – “Have they received this feedback?” The answer is typically no.
Time to take this feedback issue into your own hands.
The good news? Feedback doesn’t need to be overly formal or time-consuming. It does need to be focused. By asking a few questions, you make it easier for others to be helpful, and for you to grow.
Step 1 – Whether you’re preparing for a high-stakes pitch or a team update, ask your colleague or manager BEFORE you present, if they are willing to provide you feedback.
Step 2 – If yes, arm them with these questions so they know what to look for and how to be specific:
- What specifically did I do well?
- Can you repeat my key takeaway?
- Was it clear what I needed or wanted from my audience?
- What’s one thing I can do to improve next time?
